Each year, now for nearly four decades, the World Affairs Council of America (WACA) holds a National Conference that brings together Council leaders, members, diplomats, journalists, educators, business executives, students, and foreign policy experts to explore the global issues and policy choices that impact our lives.
Thanks to the generous support of the Malú and Carlos Alvarez Family, the WACA Student Scholars Program provides 25 outstanding undergraduate students with the opportunity to attend the conference each year. Student Scholars receive complimentary conference registration and a $1,250 stipend to help offset the cost of travel and lodging. The 2026 WACA National Conference will take place November 18–20, 2026, in Washington, D.C.

Hear from a Past Alaska Student Scholar
One recent Alaska Student Scholar reflected on how the experience shaped her academic and professional journey:
“As a first generation college student it has been such an honor to represent my community in Washington, D.C. I will strive to use the connections and resources I’ve gained to help better educate the next generation on the importance of foreign affairs. This wouldn’t have been possible if not for the generosity of both the Alaska World Affairs Council and all the members that make this amazing organization possible. From the bottom of my heart I thank you for all for this opportunity!”
– Tammalivis Salanoa, 2022 Student Scholar
The experience continues to influence her perspective today. As she reflected after the conference, participating in the WACA Student Scholars Program helped her better understand the United States’ role in a broader global system and how decisions made across borders shape trade, economic outcomes, and everyday life. It also reinforced the importance of collaboration and approaching international challenges with an appreciation for their complexity and interconnectedness.
