John Moore
With 20 plus years of international experience in the service of public, private and non-profit interests across the Islamic world, John Moore brings a unique perspective on the evolution of the political economy of security and development in the region.
Previous professional experience includes working in a variety of humanitarian, development and commercial roles across parts of South Asia, the Middle East and East Africa. This includes service with the US Defense and State Departments as well as multiple NGOs and international organizations. Highlights include work with the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), monitoring of election-related violence in Iraq, and support for the National Human Rights Commission in Nepal. Since then Mr. Moore has worked with major energy companies, advising on socio-economic challenges in the Middle East, Asia and the Americas. He has lectured at the Australian National University’s (ANU) College of Business and Economics on the Middle East, and has guest lectured on the evolution of modern Muslim terrorism for ANU’s Center for Arab and Islamic Studies and National Security College. John’s core area of interest is the use of political economy frameworks of analysis to enable greater understanding of and insight into complex political, social and economic environments.
Mr. Moore has a Masters Degree in Political Economy and International Security Studies from the Fletcher School at Tufts University, and a Bachelor of Arts in International Affairs from the Virginia Military Institute. He has also conducted non-degree research at the Center for the Study of Terrorism and Political Violence at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland and classical literature at St. Anne’s College, Oxford. He is currently pursuing doctoral studies at ANU’s Asia-Pacific College of Diplomacy. John is married with two sons, and, since moving to Alaska, has adopted a pup.
Lt Col Ty Moore
Born and raised in Alaska, Lt Col Moore enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1995 as a Reconnaissance Marine in Echo Company, 4th Reconnaissance Battalion aboard Elmendorf Air Force Base where he served in a variety of billets including Reconnaissance Team Leader.
He received his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1999 after graduating from Virginia Military Institute. Following The Basic School and Infantry Officer’s Course he was assigned to 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment in Camp Pendleton, CA where he served as a Rifle Platoon Commander on the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable) and 1st Marine Expeditionary Brigade (Task Force 58) during its deployment to Camp Rhino Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom following the attacks of September 11, 2001. Later he served as a Company Executive Officer for the initial invasion of Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF I).
Upon returning from his second deployment he was assigned to Delta Company, Marine Security Guard Battalion in Ft Lauderdale FL where he served as the Inspecting Officer and Operations Officer. Upon graduation from Expeditionary Warfare School he was assigned to 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment for duty as the Assistant Operations Officer where he deployed to Hit, Iraq as part of Regimental Combat Team 5. Later he served as a Rifle Company Commander with Regimental Combat Team 6 and deployed to Combat Outpost Viking near Fallujah, Iraq.
Upon graduation from Naval Postgraduate School and the Naval War College, LtCol Moore was assigned to III Marine Expeditionary Force in Okinawa, Japan where he served as a Military Planner and Regional Affairs Officer. He was later assigned to 3d Battalion, 3d Marine Regiment on Marine Corps Base, Kaneohe, HI where he served as the Battalion Executive Officer. Following a deployment to Okinawa, Japan he was later assigned as the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit’s Liaison Officer to Special Operations Command, Pacific. He was then assigned to 3d Marine Regiment where he served as the Assistant Operations Officer and subsequently assumed the duties of Operations Officer before his current assignment as Homeland Defense Planner, Alaska NORAD Region and Alaskan Command, Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska.
LtCol Moore is a graduate of the Marine Corps Basic Infantryman’s Course and Infantry Officer Course, The Marine Corps Tactical Marine Air-Ground Team Integration Course, Expeditionary Warfare School, The Naval Postgraduate School, The Naval War College, and The U.S. Army Red Team Course. He holds a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in International Relations from Virginia Military Institute, and a Master’s of Arts degree in Security Studies from the Naval Postgraduate School. He is an Operations and Tactics Instructor, Marine Corps Martial Arts Instructor (Black Belt), Water Survival Instructor, and graduate of the Cold Weather Survival and Airborne Schools.
LtCol Moore is married to the former Miss Jennifer N. Steffen of Anchorage, Alaska and they have three children: Isabella age 12, Penelope age 10, and Nathaniel age 8.
