ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Jonathan Noble serves as the deputy to the Vice President and Associate Provost for Internationalization. He holds the dual roles of NDG’s Senior Assistant Provost for Internationalization and Global Executive Director. In these dual roles, Noble directly supports the Vice President and Associate Provost’s leadership of Notre Dame Global’s (NDG) global leadership team, which includes the directors of Notre Dame’s 12 global locations and 5 divisions (Finance and Administration, Global Education, Global Innovation, Global Operations, and International Students and Scholars) and serves as NDG’s deputy vice president to internal and external constituents and partners. Noble also leads NDG’s academic affairs, strategy, and innovation and oversees the development of NDG’s newly created global innovation team to accelerate academic innovation in global education, scholarship, and research in support of the University’s strategic framework and endeavor to be the premiere global Catholic research university. Noble also provides academic leadership for NDG’s 7 regional faculty advisory committees, which serve to support and strengthen NDG’s faculty engagement and academic strategy.
Noble is a teaching professor for Notre Dame Global, a faculty fellow of both the Liu Institute for Asia & Asian Studies and the Pulte Institute for Global Development, and serves on the University’s research development working group and the Provost Office’s new program committee. He previously served as an advisor for the Keough School of Global Affairs, a member of the Keough School’s leadership council, the acting director of the Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies, and a faculty fellow of the Kellogg Institute for International Studies. As NDG’s assistant provost for Asia between 2012 and 2017, Noble was the founding director of the University’s Beijing location and Greater China Scholars Program. He served as the advisor to the provost’s office for Asia initiatives between 2007 and 2011, during which he assisted in the establishment of the Liu Institute for Asia & Asian Studies and its flagship Asia Leadership Forum.
Focusing his research and teaching on contemporary Chinese culture and society, Noble is the author of over 50 articles, essays, and translations, and was one of 20 China scholars in the United States selected in 2005 to participate in the inaugural Public Intellectuals Program sponsored by the National Committee on United States-China Relations. Noble holds a Ph.D. in East Asian languages and literatures from The Ohio State University and a B.A. in East Asian studies from the College of William & Mary.
