His nerd super power is\, he can arti culate stuff. He can take a room full of half baked\, half expressed thoug hts and turn them into ideas with force and power.\n\nHe was the inaugural Director of the UAA Confucius Institute. His book\, A Great Disobedience Against the People\, Japan’s Siberian Intervention\, 1918-1922\, the fi rst ever complete narrative in English\, appeared in February 2011. He is also author of Japan Since 1945 in 2014 for the Association for Asian St udies Key Issues in Asian Studies Series.\n\nHis current research focuses on the history of the Heisei period (1989-2018) including the Crisis in Ja panese Professional Baseball of 2004 and the nature of change in Heisei Ja pan. He analyzed debates about Japanese identity during the Lost Decade\, 1992-2004\, in “Images of What Never Was to Suggest What Might Be\; Japa nese Popular Culture and Japaneseness\,” for the edited volume The Dyna mics of Cultural Counterpoint in Asian Studies.
