SUMMARY:The Hidden Curse of Natural Resources: Economic Impacts at Home & A
 broad | Dr. Alexander James
DESCRIPTION:\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nThe Resource Curse: A Statistical Mirage?\n\nA s
urprising feature of resource-rich economies is slow growth. It is often a
rgued that natural-resource production impedes development by creating mar
ket or institutional failures. A declining resource sector is disproportio
nately reflected in resource-dependent countries. Dr. James Alexander argu
es that there is little evidence that resource dependence impedes growth i
n non-resource sectors.\nDr. James was born in Northern California and r
eceived his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Wyoming in 2012. Aft
er graduating\, he worked for two years as a research fellow at the Center
for the Analysis of Resource-Rich Economies at the University of Oxford a
nd is currently Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Alas
ka Anchorage. His research interests broadly include resource-rich economi
es and he has published numerous articles that examine the social and econ
omic consequences of natural-resource booms and busts.\n&nbsp\;\n\nThe eve
ning's discussion will be moderated by Larry Persily\n\nLarry Persily has
more than 20 years of experience as a reporter\, editor and newspaper owne
r in Alaska\, followed by more than 20 years in public policy work at stat
e\, municipal and federal jobs\, focusing on fiscal\, tax\, oil and gas an
