SUMMARY:Atomic Energy and the Arrogance of Man: Revisiting the Chernobyl Nu
 clear Disaster | Serhii Plokhii
DESCRIPTION:\nOn the morning of April 26\, 1986\, the world witnessed the w
orst nuclear disaster in history: the explosion of a reactor at the Cherno
byl Nuclear Power Plant in Soviet Ukraine. Dozens died of radiation poison
ing\, fallout contaminated half the continent\, and thousands fell ill. In
his lecture\, Serhii Plokhii draws on new sources to lay bare the flaws o
f the Soviet nuclear industry\, tracing the disaster to the authoritarian
character of Communist party rule\, the regime’s control of scientific i
nformation\, and its emphasis on economic development over all else. Today
\, the risk of another Chernobyl\, claims Plokhii\, looms in the mismanage
ment of nuclear power in the developing world.\nSerhii Plokhii is the My
khailo Hrushevsky Professor of History and the director of the Ukrainian R
esearch Institute at Harvard University. His research interests include t
he intellectual\, cultural\, and international history of Eastern Europe\,
with an emphasis on Ukraine. A leading authority on the region\, he has
published extensively in English\, Ukrainian and Russian. His books deal w
ith history of religion\, origins of national identities\, history of the
Soviet Union and the Soviet-American rivalry in the Cold War\, and won num
erous awards\, including the Lionel Gelber Prize for the best English-lang
uage book on the international relations and the Shevchenko National Prize
(Ukraine). He is the author of Yalta: The Price of Peace (2010)\, The
Last Empire: The Final Days of the Soviet Union (2014)\, The Gates of E
urope: A History of Ukraine (2015)\, and most recently\, Chernobyl: The
History of a Nuclear Catastrophe (2018).\n&nbsp\;\n\nSerhii Plokhii's bo
oks will be available for purchase at Alaska World Affair Council's progra
ms and events and office. Contact rachel.williams@alaskaworldaffirs.org wi
th questions.\n\n"An exemplary account of Europe's least-known large count
ry... leavened by aphorism and anecdote." --Wall Street Journal\n\nAward-w
inning historian Serhii Plokhy presents the authoritative history of Ukrai
ne and its people from the time of Herodotus to the present crisis with Ru
ssia. As Ukraine once again finds itself at the center of global attention
\, The Gates of Europe provides unique insight into the origins of the m
ost dangerous international crisis since the end of the Cold War.\n\n\n\n\
n\nIn the fall of 1961\, KGB assassin Bogdan Stashinsky defected to West G
ermany. After spilling his secrets to the CIA\, Stashinsky was put on tria
l in what would be the most publicized assassination case of the entire Co
ld War. The publicity stirred up by the Stashinsky case forced the KGB to
change its modus operandi abroad and helped end the career of Aleksandr Sh
elepin\, one of the most ambitious and dangerous Soviet leaders. Stashinsk
y's testimony\, implicating the Kremlin rulers in political assassinations
carried out abroad\, shook the world of international politics. Stashinsk
y's story would inspire films\, plays\, and books—including Ian Fleming'
s last James Bond novel\, The Man with the Golden Gun.\n\nA thrilling tal
e of Soviet spy craft\, complete with exploding parcels\, elaborately stag
ed coverups\, double agents\, and double crosses\, The Man with the Poiso
n Gun offers unparalleled insight into the shadowy world of Cold War espi
 onage.\n\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n\n\nProgram Details\n\n Check-in will b
