Dr. Landry Signé
Dr. Signé is a multiple award-winning international expert, Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Alaska Anchorage, Distinguished Fellow and Lecturer in Emerging Markets at Stanford University, 2011-2013 Banting Fellow “for best and brightest researchers internationally” at Stanford University’s Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (CDDRL) and 2012 Visiting Scholar at Oxford University. He has been directing a research project on the evolution of 48 Sub-Saharan African economies, democracies and governance, explaining successful trajectories to help high-level and influential public and private-sector leaders better resolve African challenges. Dr. Signé is the Co-Founder and CEO of the award- winning Global Network for Africa’s Prosperity (www.africaprosperity.com), an initiative committed to improve the state of Africa by engaging “civil society, academic, political, business, media and international actors sharing a passion for Africa to join efforts in fostering Africa’s development and shaping a better future for the continent”.
As a pioneer at Stanford University, he is the first in the Silicon Valley to have initiated a course presenting Africa as a continent of economic opportunities, as most courses present Africa as a place of turmoil, and has brought top executives, entrepreneurs, investors and Stanford students together to spur business and investment strategies for emerging African markets. Prior to joining the CDDRL, Dr. Signé was a Visiting Scholar at the Stanford Center on African Studies, Part-time Professor in Political Science at the universities of Ottawa and Montreal, a Director at the United Nations Association of Canada-Greater Montreal, a Founding President at a strategic management and public affairs firm. He has monitored political, economic, legal and humanitarian developments and drafted strategic notes with recommendations for preventive diplomacy and conflict resolution for the United Nations Department of Political Affairs, and theVice-President of the United Nations General Assembly.
Dr. Signé completed his PhD in Political Science (2010), with the Award of Excellence, at the University of Montreal, and has been bestowed the Award for the Best International PhD Dissertation by the Center for International Studies and Research (CÉRIUM). He was named New Leader for Tomorrow committed to shape the global agenda and 21st century major challenges by an international organization based in Switzerland. He is also the winner of the awards for Outstanding Visionary Leadership for “his pioneering role in promoting entrepreneurial opportunities, accountable governance and economic development for Africa in the Silicon Valley and North America” (USA); Jury’s Favorite Choice Award for Vision and Inspiration (Canada); Leadership for Change in Africa Program as a high potential “catalyst for change in Africa” (United Kingdom/Ghana). He was bestowed the Governor General of Canada Award for his “outstanding and selfless contribution to his community and to Canada” by his Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada, who fully exercises the duties of Canada’s Head of State and Representative of Her Majesty Queen Elisabeth II.
His latest book, Le NEPAD et les institutions financières internationales en Afrique au 21e siècle [English translation: NEPAD and international financial institutions in Africa of the 21st century] (L’Harmattan, 2013) received the Best International Book Award by TOUKI Montreal.
Dr. Signé is a distinguished speaker and frequent commentator on issues of African governance, emerging markets, economic development, and international affairs in prestigious platforms on three continents, including The New York Times.
