Dr. Jan Agosti is a Senior
Program Officer in
Infectious Disease
Development and Strategic
Program Lead for Neglected
and Other Infectious
Diseases at the Bill &
Melinda Gates Foundation.
Her primary areas of focus
are enteric vaccines, HPV
vaccine and neglected
tropical diseases. She
directed clinical research
at Immunex (Amgen) for the
previous eleven years,
conducting phase 1-4 studies
and strategic development of
multiple novel biologic
compounds for immunologic
disorders, infectious
diseases and vaccines. These
efforts led to
first-in-class compounds and
successful therapeutics.
When on the medical school
faculty of the University of
Washington, she co-founded
the AIDS Vaccine Evaluation
Unit, founded the AIDS
clinic at University of
Washington Hospitals and
Clinics and co-directed the
AIDS Clinical Trials Unit.
These efforts contributed to
the first approved
antiretroviral treatments.
Author of over 50 scientific
publications, she is board
certified in Internal
Medicine, Infectious Disease
and Allergy and Immunology.
Jan completed her
undergraduate education at
Stanford University with
honors and
received her medical degree
at the University of
California, San Diego. She
finished her internal
medicine internship at
University of Chicago and
internal medicine residency
and research fellowships at
the University of Washington
where she did laboratory
research in immunology and
parasitology leading to the
Young Investigator Award of
the American Society of
Allergy and Immunology. She
has done fieldwork in
developing countries,
including India and the
Thai/Cambodian border.
